Re bill 23
While I agree we need affordable housing, the relentless sprawl of housing, encroaching on our environment is simply bad planning and shortsighted - achieving short term goals at a longer term cost.
Beyond stressing our infrastructure, Development has adverse impact that extends beyond its immediate local footprint.
The unique features of the moraine make development problematic and will not be remediated but simply assigning a green belt designation to other regions.
The moraine is in important source of ground water and is a critical headwater region. The loss of ground water and lowered water tables will have widespread effects on both wildlife and farming.
Loss of an environmental corridor will disrupt movement of wildlife and have far reaching implications - beyond the loss of local habitats.
I have personally witnessed the effects of diversion of groundwater on wetlands with loss of both animal and plant life in our community in King.
The loss of protected green space sets a dangerous precedent and becomes slippery slope. A key mandate of any government is to serve to protect the commons. As such the government must be stewards of greenspace. Once developed it will be lost forever.
Environmental resources must be held to the same regard and protection as man-made works. We would never accept the destruction of a Rembrandt or Picasso.
