Re: Proposed Natural Hazards Regulatory Changes ERO Notice/019-2927
This proposal, if implemented, would significantly weaken the definition of wetlands. There are many wetland areas in Ontario that would be excluded from control under the proposed legislation.
Focusing approvals under the Conservation Authorities Act on protecting people and property against the risk of natural hazards is laudable but ignoring wetlands that are critically important to the environment would be a folly. And if a developer wished to build houses near a wetland that is not currently a hazard, the proximity of the wetland to the housing development would make it a hazard.
We urge the Government of Ontario to maintain the current powers and authorities of the CA's and to recognize the role that all wetlands play in maintaining a healthy environment on our planet.
