College programs need to be created specifically for designers or the current Architecture Technology programs need to have streams for the various pathways of AT or designer. Currently those programs train for ATs to work within architecture firms but don't cover enough content for individuals to graduate and be prepared to write their Ministry exams for a BCIN. Content that needs to be added or more thoroughly covered are the OBC (not nearly enough instruction in AT programs), zoning, urban planning & bylaws (including densification policies like secondary suites), GIS mapping, site planning, business management/billing, residential and small building work process & protocols. I am and architectural designer and after graduating from an AT program paid for extra con ed & self study to be able to write my exams.
