On October 8, 2018, the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released another report calling for urgent action to reduce carbon emissions and hold the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. As Canadians and Ontarians, we must do our part to reduce carbon emissions.
In Ontario, we have already experienced some of the effects of extreme weather which will be worsened by climate change: floods, wind storms, and forest fires have all caused property damage and cost citizens and taxpayers millions of dollars to fight, clean up and repair the damage.
The proposed bill - Bill 4, Cap and Trade Cancellation Act, 2018 – reverses any progress that we have made in Ontario on reducing carbon emissions. The Cap and Trade program that was in place is not the whole solution to the climate problem, but doing nothing is not an option. Removing the cap and trade system before we have readied a replacement is unconscionable!
For the sake of our children, grandchildren, and for the other species with whom we share the planet – we must act now. I ask the Ontario government to immediately put in place a carbon pricing system that will reduce carbon emissions in a systematic and measurable way.
