I am extremely concerned about the recent changes to environmental laws in Ontario, particularly the cancellation of the Cap and Trade program. This was an excellent program which was making a genuine difference in the carbon emissions produced by major polluters in our province. Climate change is the most serious issue that confronts us today and it is very frustrating to see such a worthwhile program cancelled with nothing to replace it.
The effects of climate change are evident throughout the world. We have the tools to make changes and reduce these emissions, yet no sustainable, meaningful action has occurred. Whenever any action has been taken, it is immediately reversed by the next government.
The UN climate change report released today states that "world leaders have a moral obligation to act" and that we have 12 years to make a difference.
It is imperative that the Ontario government lead by Premier Ford take strong action immediately to reverse the damage done by cancelling the Cap and Trade Program.
It is only by chance that I found out about this "consultation" process. I would like to see a more meaningful process put in place where citizens, organizations and business leaders can work together to solve this problem.
