I am extremely concerned that the province of Ontario is not doing enough to combat climate change. I am a scientist at the University of Ottawa - and I am a mother of two little boys, 3 and 5. The science of climate change is clear - if we do not act quickly and decisively, our planet will not be able to support a high quality of life for many or most people who are children today.
The UN's most recent report predicts climate issues hitting crisis levels as early as 2040. So far the vast majority of scientists predictions on climate change have come true. Carbon pricing, such as through cap and trade, are one way to drive our economy away from dangerous greenhouse emitting fuels.
And yet the Ontario government is planning to cancel this pricing plan, with nothing being announced to replace it. The Ford government cites its concern for working class people in the cancelation of this plan. I am also concerned for working class people. All of us will suffer if we do not get carbon emissions under control as soon as possible. We need to act now. Here is a link to the UN Report: http://www.ipcc.ch/report/sr15/
I do not understand. Why are we risking our children's future? Why are we risking working class people's future? If the new Ontario government is supposed to be 'for the people', how can we not then act on the greatest risk to the future of people, when we have the chance?
