It is shocking and sad to watch governments callously disregard the importance of trees, wildlife and green spaces to humans. Each urban tree has a value of $US64,000 in the impact it has on the environment, flooding, air filtration, cooling, peace and shade.
I downtown Toronto we have lost 63 important trees in a rare urban park as dozens of skyscraping condos are built.
According to countless studies, being in nature contributes to health and wellness in significant ways. What will happen to health care costs when more people are angry, depressed or lonely and there is no nature to moderate the stresses of city dwelling?
