I am opposed to the cancellation of the Cap and Trade program in Ontario. I strongly believe that we must put a price on carbon (and FINALLY DID!) to avoid irreversible climate change. Without an incentive to change behaviour, individuals, businesses and governments choose what appears to be the 'low cost' option - in other words, to continue to waste energy and to pick products whose prices are lower because the environmental damage that is linked to production, use and disposal of these products is not included in the price. Until there is a cost associated with energy waste and environmental impacts, these impacts remain hidden and we mortgage our children's future by kicking the can down the road. I support a responsible government who will make polluters pay, and reward individuals and businesses for responsible behaviour that protects our natural environment for future generations. I encourage a healthy dialogue about how we can protect the environment AND build the economy - and I am very discouraged by the black/white, either/or nature of the current discourse. We need to work together to protect the future of our country - and protecting the environment is urgent, because soon it will be too late.
