On October 8, 2018, yet another high profile climate change report was released and was circulated heavily through the news and social media. This report, published by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, with more than 6,000 scientific references cited, warns that 1.5°C of global warming above pre-industrial levels is likely to occur between 2030 and 2052. Sea level rise will drive millions from their homes, and crop yields will fall dramatically in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America.
On this same day in October of 2018, two renowned economists won a Nobel Prize on for their work in climate change economics. These experts say that carbon taxes are the solution to climate change.
Climate change should be seen as a “long-game” challenge that every citizen and all governments are responsible for.
The reason I reduce my personal emissions is because I do not want my decisions to indirectly contribute to climate change disasters. If the Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act (2016) is repealed, the Ontario PC government, including those reading this letter, WILL BE partially responsible for the natural disasters, reduced crop yields, human displacement and death that will result from global warming.
The Ontario government has the power and the DUTY to take this responsibility seriously by heeding the advice of experts - Include carbon taxes in Ontario’s Climate change plan.
