As a professional working with key clients in the real estate, government, and development sectors, I strongly disagree with the repeal of cap and trade. Cap and trade, or other financial mechanisms to incentive the reduction of carbon emissions, are broadly supported by the business community as the most viable instruments to effect the necessary changes that will reduce our contribution to climate change. Further, it is clear that taking any and all action now will be significantly less expensive than reacting to the uncontrolled effects of climate change after the fact. By repealing cap and trade without putting forward any alternative legislation designed to achieve real action to reduce GHGs, the Ford government panders to the uninformed segment of the electorate to score cheap political points, demonstrating total lack of leadership to those decision-makers who are directly affected by pricing carbon. Unless the government can provide an educated, nuanced, effective policy to address carbon emissions, cap and trade should be left alone to do the job it was intended to accomplish.
