In the light of the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Ontario government’s Bill 4 is sheer lunacy. Why do our political leaders believe they can ignore the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of countless experts around the world? Bill 4 reflects short-term thinking, political expediency, and head-in-the-sand planning.
We must begin to act seriously to reduce GHG emissions today! Tomorrow will be too late! All expert advice from around the world, including a recent Nobel Prize winner, points to a form of carbon tax as an essential component of any effective plan. In addition, our government should be pulling out all the stops to promote renewables. Instead, the Ford government not only has no plan, but is actually reversing - reversing! - efforts.
PremierFord, please think beyond the current election cycle and the current generation of voters, and take dramatic, concrete and immediate steps to address the very real threats of climate change - the most important and urgent issue facing your government, your constituents and the planet.
