I believe this is an incredibly short-sighted and misguided initiative. While cap and trade has its flaws, there is little doubt that providing a market for carbon is the most cost-effective and efficient (as well as more classically liberal or conservative) approach to reducing carbon emissions. I find it shocking that Mr. Ford and his federal counterparts would prefer to rely upon command-and-control instruments to achieve this end, which seem antithetical to the "small-government" rhetoric currently nauseating Ontarians. I do not agree with the cancellation of this program, but at the very least I would expect to see a coherent and fully costed climate plan that does more than package up existing program and research initiatives under a new umbrella. However I have very little faith that this government cares about the future of this province beyond the next election cycle. I wish the public servants in charge of implementing Mr. Ford's myopic, uneducated, and frankly embarrassing vision for our province the best of luck.
