Climate change is occurring; we are witnessing weather and environmental changes that can only be attributed to climate change. It is our obligation for this and future generations to mitigate its effects and undertake adaptation actions as rapidly as possible. It is not a question of whether we should do anything at all, but rather, how can we mitigate as quickly and effectively as possible. Ignoring Climate Change and it's potential impacts on our livelihood is irresponsible and misguided.
Our provincial government needs a climate change plan - hopefully one that compliments what the federal government proposes to maximize efficiencies. Up until this provincial government was voted in this summer, we had one that was responsible and took accountability. There is no reason to spend scare public resources on redoing a perfectly good system. I do not support my tax dollars going towards dismantling a program I supported, or challenging the federal government’s right to ensure Canadians are protected from climate change. I am happy that at least the federal government has made the right decision and prioritizes the needs of all Canadian citizens at this crucial time.
I encourage the Ontario government to put aside its philosophical differences with the previous government and do what’s best for Ontario in helping us mitigate and adapt to our new climate reality. We have already delayed action by a quarter of a year and while we wait for some new plan it will be a half a year of inaction that we can ill afford. Your are responsible to the residents of Ontario- hopefully you will act with integrity and reconsider this misguided decision.
