Many anglers use rainbow spawn as bait in the form of roe bags. This practice results in the death of many female Steelhead simply for the roe, a practice that diminishes the population. Having fished Steelhead for more than 40 years my perception is that the populations in the Georgian Bay tributaries are severely diminished . I have fished Steelhead in BC where roe bans were introduced years ago and accepted by the fishing community because of the understanding that the practice benefited the fish.
