Hello, I am currently a resident of Dresden, Ontario, and have lived here for most of my life. Last week, it was brought to my attention (as well as most of the rest of my town) that York 1 has purchased land, in very close proximity to my town, to house materials that both can and cannot be recycled. In essence, a new town dump, not for my town, but for the rest of Ontario’s trash.
I can say, and I am unanimous in this, that our town does not want this dump. We do not want a trash strewn crap Center on the edge of town. We already deal with smells from Chatham and the smell of our cannery, we don’t need the stench of garbage on top. We don’t need the bugs and vermin it will bring.
We do not want the additional noise and traffic for dump trucks. We are also concerned as this “proposed site” is very close to waterways that protect endangered species.
Why should the town of Dresden, home to the historic Josiah Henson House Museum which receives many visitors a year, house someone else’s biological, medical and other non-recyclable waste? Why here? Is it because we are a small town that our lord and Saviour Toronto, can’t even point to on a map? Or is it because people think we are town bumpkin red-necks who will agree to anything?
How will this dump benefit my town? How can we be absolutely sure it will be environmentally safe? I don’t think we can be, especially since it feels that people will cut corners on this endeavour as they fell it won’t affect them.
The town of Dresden says no to your proposed dump site. It will never benefit us and can only be viewed as detrimental.
