To whom it concerns,
First of all I don't like the way York 1 has been so deceptive to Dresden and surrounding area on their approach to trying to establish a mega dump in Dresden. March 1, at the local arena, there was a ridiculous meeting held by York 1 to attempt to ask and answer any concerns. First of all no one could hear much of what was being said within a couple feet of someone speaking. A lot of answers by York 1 were "I don't know, we will have to look into this, or go over there and talk to that person". If the information evening was so poorly run by York 1 for the community one has to wonder how York 1 will safely and effectively manage a mega dump in our back yard!
As a resident of Dresden I have many concerns.
To list a few,
* Huge increase of truck traffic going through Dresden and surrounding areas. What about travelling through school districts, avoiding multiple slow moving agricultural equipment, pounding up the roads, travelling over a 75 year old bridge in Dresden.
* Increase in truck noise, smells, garbage falling off the trucks, leakage from dump trucks.
* I don't believe it will be a 0900 to 1700 or 0700 to1900 work day for the dump as stated by the York 1 VP. Why then has York1 already requested for 24/7 work hours!
* As a long time health care professional I have concerns for air, water, noise and soil pollution that will affect everyone in Dresden and surrounding area. Molly creek runs through the proposed York 1 property, flows into the Sydenham river which eventually runs past small communities, through the city of Wallaceburg and Walpole Indian reservation before dumping into the St. Clair river. What pollution will be in the water.
How do you prevent water runoff after a rain or storm? Part of the dump is situated in a flood plain. At the March 1 meeting the engineer couldn't answer where the leachate water was to be recycled as the two approved water treatment plants in Chatham Kent are at maximum capacity. "He didn't know",
* A representative for York 1 was questioned about the quality of the water after the dump potentially and very likely will destroy resident water wells. He suggested extending the water main from Dresden to those affected. At whose expense, York 1?
Even if the water main was extended as suggested, how is that going to help the wildlife some which is seen only in the Sydenham watershed area? Many local species will become distinct forever.
* Economically it will lead to lost jobs as residents leave the area which in return causes reduced house prices. I fail to see how a mega dump is "an unique opportunity" as suggested numerous times by a York 1 representative during a meeting as a good thing for Dresden (held February 10th). I can't see any positives only numerous negatives to this dump proposal.
***The dump is situated less than one kilometre from the old dump. It is my understanding that a dump should be no closer than 3.5 kilometre from town. The whole town of Dresden is encompassed within the 3.5 kilometre distance. Actually the southern boundary of land purchased by York 1 is only across the Croton Line. Only separated by a FEW FEET from the edge of Dresden.!!!
I am totally against this proposal.
