I am delighted to hear that the MInistry has responded to the widespread concern about our heritage properties in Ontario and decided on a two-year extension of the deadline for the retention of heritage registers.
I would prefer to see it extended to five years, which is what we asked for when we signed the petitions.
The requirements for designations take a lot of time to fulfill and our heritage planners are swamped. All this having been said. I cabnnot understand the reason behind removing the registers of properties of heritage avalue. They serve as a valuable tool for communities and researchers alike and should be maintained as part of Ontgario's rich history. Surely there must be some way to keep the registers but allow more leeway for building for the future. They represent an enoormous amount of human effort, time, and expertise to develop, and it would be a great shame to see this wasted.
