I would like to comment on the extension of the deadline to convert listed heritage properties to fully protected or designated properties. While I am not directly involved in heritage preservation initiatives, I appreciate the extra two years to allow for designation. However, I am unsure why the deadline was only extended by two years rather than the five originally requested given the time and work required to review all listed properties. I lead a walking tour in my community that includes listed heritage properties. I see firsthand how our heritage is an opportunity for tourism and for a sense of community and pride. There is no downside in allowing the necessary time to make sound decisions on the preservation of our heritage. Please consider a further extension or, better yet, an elimination of this deadline.
