This legislation is unwarranted and will expend resources that are needed elsewhere, such as education, healthcare, or public transit.
First, it is an overreach of provincial power where the province is spending unnecessary time and resources micro managing municipalities.
Second, removing existing bike lines is costly and will cause more issues with traffic during their removal.
Thirdly, this can place additional financial burden on individuals who cannot afford a vehicle as they will need to take public transit options that also may not be running frequently.
Lastly, the best way to reduce gridlock is to reduce the number of people in cars. By removing bike lanes, the province will be incentivizing constituents to use motor vehicles to get around, which will increase traffic.
To reduce traffic the province can:
a) Divert people away from high density areas. People should not be growing through Toronto unless their destination is in Toronto.
b) Providing effective alternative transport methods such as robust public transit and avenues for active transport (such as bike lanes), so people have alternative methods available to them other than driving.
c) Change zoning laws to allow for more mixed use neighbourhoods so more people can live close to where they work so they don't have to commute, or at the very least, live close to shops and services so they can access the majority of what they need either without a car, or with a very short drive.
To conclude, this bill should not be passed as it will not solve traffic issues and will waste money that can be spent more effectively.
