This is a poorly planned act and does not take into account the numerous studies that prove how beneficial alternative transit routes, including bike lanes, are at improving safety and reducing congestion on our roads. I am immensely proud that the Bank Street Renewal Project in Ottawa that I live near and use daily will feature grade-separated bike lanes and an enhanced pedestrian realm. I’m excited for my son to use them as he grows up and becomes more independent to get around safely. I wish every parent in Ontario had the same peace of mind in their own neighborhoods. Unfortunately, this act will put children (and adults) at unnecessary risk by politicizing the construction of bike lanes. I urge the government to prioritize the safety of all road users instead of only the quantity of cars.
