Toyota Tsusho Canada Limited is a subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho which is a large Japanese trading
company. We have operations in Ontario, employing about 400 people. We do a wide range of
importing, exporting and investing as well as supporting Toyota Motor plants in Cambridge and Woodstock.
We want to propose a 30 MW solar project which will be on the site of Toyota Motors Manufacturing plant in Woodstock Ontario where they are making the Rav 4 vehicle.
Our comment/ask is the following:
There is a significant need for new generation resources in Ontario.
The sites need to respect municipal interests, indigenous values, and preserve agricultural lands.
We think that because our project is located near the large load centres obviating the need for
long transmission, we think they should be given some special consideration.
Our project though would probably be small compared with larger projects proposed farther away
from the load centres but our understanding is that we are all bidding in and need to be competitive.
But a 30 MW project will struggle to compete with a 200 MW project on a strict $/MWh basis.
Therefore recognizing the specific value of these smaller projects near to where the power is needed would help to level the playing field in our humble opinion.
We assume this could be done by allocating bonus points for smaller projects located in ideal areas where the power is required.
Also we are open to inviting indigenous partner(s) to join our project but after speaking with the Municipality of Woodstock and Toyota Motors Canada, it seems that there are no obvious local indigenous stakeholders in the site area. Not knowing how points will be allocated we would like some direction on whether we should be reaching out to indigenous groups farther afield to participate or not.
Thank you for soliciting and accepting our comments.
Best regards.
