It appears that you are gutting the current legislation to such a degree that the government is giving itself the power to decide what species should remain protected, be added to the list or removed from the list. Is this not a conflict? If the government wants a project to proceed, it can simply choose to remove a species from the protected list. That’s hardly a firm stance on environmental protection and certainly doesn’t live up to the intent of the current legislation.
And loosening protections on habitat can only have a detrimental effect on the species. By allowing a project to proceed immediately after registration just gives a green light to go ahead before it’s even been determined how much damage the project could cause.
There needs to be a stronger balance between environmental and species protections and the need for economic development. This legislation needs to meet the requirements for both and it definitely doesn’t in its current form.
