Subject: Strong Opposition to Bill 5 and the Reckless Landfill Expansion on Irish School Road
I am writing to voice my serious and urgent opposition to Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025, and particularly to its reckless removal of environmental protections for the proposed landfill expansion on Irish School Road in Dresden.
Bill 5’s attempt to bypass environmental assessments for major projects like this is not just short-sighted — it is dangerous. The environmental risks posed by expanding landfill operations in this region are real, irreversible, and could lead to devastating consequences for local residents, agriculture, and the broader environment.
Groundwater contamination is not a hypothetical threat; it is a proven outcome of poorly managed landfill sites. Dresden relies on clean, reliable groundwater for farming, for homes, and for the economic health of the region. A single mistake could permanently pollute the water supply — and there is no fixing it after the fact. Furthermore, air quality degradation from waste processing, transportation emissions, and odours will directly threaten the health of children, seniors, and families living nearby.
Ignoring these risks in the name of short-term economic expediency is an abdication of responsibility. Communities across Ontario are paying close attention, and the message Bill 5 sends is clear: that the government is willing to gamble with the environment and the health of its citizens for political convenience.
Public outrage is building — not only among environmental advocates but among everyday Ontarians who expect better from their leadership. Proceeding without full environmental review and public consultation will not be seen as decisive leadership. It will be seen as a betrayal of the communities you were elected to serve.
I urge you to immediately halt the application of Bill 5 to the Irish School Road landfill project. Restore the environmental assessment process. Respect the voices of the people you represent. Protect the land, air, and water that future generations are depending on.
Leadership is not shown by rushing through dangerous decisions. It is shown by having the courage to stop, listen, and do what is right — even when it requires changing course.
I look forward to your response and your action on this critical issue.
