Doug Ford's Bill 5 "Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025" will GUT Ontario's endangered species act removing protections for wildlife and the habitats they need to survive.
Framed as a bill to to remove "red tape"(environmental assessments and indigenous consultation) to help Ontario handle tariffs and trade disruptions... but has nothing to do with tariffs at all. It creates "special economic zones" that allows laws to be bypassed to "speed up the economy"... Doesn't make sense.
Gives politicians, NOT SCIENTISTS the power to decide which species get help and opens the door for development and very sensitive areas including the
GREEN BELT, Niagra.= A UNESCO world biosphere reserve, Oak Ridges moraine= key water recharge zone, Peterborough-simcoe= Protected farmland, GTA=Rouge river valleys, don and Humber
This puts animals like Red size dace, Monarch, Blandings turtle and many others in danger just to speed up construction and benefit big developers.
This is an environmental emergency,
THIS IS MORE THAN JUST THE ANIMALS IT'S ABOUT OUR FUTURE.
This bill is already being used already to build a landfill in Chattam-Kent without having an envimental assessment done.
Here is a list of the species in that area specific geographic area that will have their protection taken away.
Prothonotary warbler
King rail
Butlers garter snake
Blandings turtle
Eastern Fox snake
Northern map turtle
Karner blue butterfly
Eastern prairie fringed orchid
