I strongly oppose Bill 5 as it represents a significant step backward for environmental protection, Indigenous rights, and meaningful climate action. This legislation weakens habitat protections and makes it easier for developers to evade conservation rules; thereby undermining key safeguards that protect endangered species. It also threatens Indigenous lands by prioritizing industrial and infrastructure projects over the interests and consent of affected communities. This directly violates inherent indigenous rights and their deep ties to the land. Moreover, Bill 5 stalls progressive climate policies by encouraging urban sprawl and car-dependent development, rather than investing in sustainable infrastructure and preserving vital ecosystems. At a time when bold, inclusive action is urgently needed to address the climate crisis and uphold environmental justice, Bill 5 serves only to entrench short-term economic interests at the expense of long-term ecological and social well-being. Do not pass Bill 5.
