This bill demonstrates a lack of understanding, or more likely, care, in terms of Ontario’s wildlife and ecology. Much like us, animals cannot survive with only their immediate homes; food, water, places to roam and corridors connecting them to a wider landscape are critical - pretending to not know this in a changed definition of habitat is ridiculous. As a young adult born and raised in Ontario, having worked and lived here for the better part of 25 years, this is one of the most egregious proposals I have ever seen put forward by our provincial government. Ford needs to decide whether he wants to play the losing game of forever chasing upward growth, or finally invest in measures to work towards a more sustainable, circular economy. While we know he has a well-documented tendency to forfeit environment for profit, this is absolutely unacceptable, even for him. I urge everyone who has a hand in this bill to consider those who will come after you! They may never get to experience the beauty and wonder of Ontario as we know it now if you let it be destroyed by Bill 5. Also, if that doesn’t sway you at all, please consider the economically crucial ecosystem services all of these habitats and organisms provide us with.
