I strongly oppose Bill 5 – Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025. This legislation poses serious risks to environmental protection, public accountability, and Indigenous rights in Ontario.
The creation of Special Economic Zones that exempt projects from environmental assessments, labor laws, and municipal planning undermines decades of progress in responsible development. It removes vital oversight mechanisms and hands disproportionate power to the provincial cabinet—without requiring transparency or community input.
Exempting Ontario Place and other projects from the Environmental Bill of Rights further silences Ontarians, denying us the right to review and comment on changes that impact our shared land and water. This sets a dangerous precedent.
Most troublingly, the lack of meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities violates treaty obligations and fails to uphold the principles of reconciliation.
I urge the Ontario government to withdraw this bill and instead prioritize policies that protect our natural heritage, strengthen democratic engagement, and respect Indigenous sovereignty.
This bill does not reflect the will or best interests of the people of Ontario.
