Dear Premier Ford,
I am writing as a concerned citizen of Ontario to express my deep opposition to any proposals that would weaken or dismantle the Endangered Species Act.
This legislation exists for a critical reason: to protect the most vulnerable wildlife in our province from extinction. Eroding its protections would not only put countless species at greater risk, but also harm the delicate ecosystems that sustain our communities, our economy, and our future.
The current Act already allows for reasonable development while safeguarding biodiversity. Stripping it down in favor of short-term industrial or economic gain is not a solution—it is a step backward that will have long-term consequences for generations to come.
As an Ontario Parks warden, I see firsthand how much our natural environment means to the people of this province. Every year, countless residents and visitors come to our parks to camp, hike, paddle, and reconnect with nature. These experiences are not just recreational—they foster a deep appreciation for Ontario’s landscapes and wildlife. The Endangered Species Act plays a vital role in preserving these natural areas and the species that make them unique. Weakening this legislation would jeopardize the very places that bring people peace, joy, and connection to the land.
Ontario has a responsibility to be a leader in environmental stewardship, not a cautionary tale of environmental neglect. I urge you to listen to scientists, Indigenous communities, conservation experts, and the many Ontarians who support strong environmental protections. Please commit to preserving and strengthening the Endangered Species Act—not dismantling it.
