Dear Premier Ford,
As a concerned Northern Ontarian who cares deeply about the health of Ontario’s lands, waters, and communities, I am writing to strongly oppose Bill 5: the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act.
I’m especially troubled by the proposals to weaken protections for endangered species and to create Special Economic Zones. These moves put short-term economic interests ahead of long-term environmental stability and community wellbeing.
Under Schedule 9, the Special Economic Zones Act would give Cabinet the power to override municipal and provincial regulations for selected projects. This isn’t just a policy shift—it’s a sweeping expansion of executive power, with very real consequences for the people and ecosystems affected.
Even more distressing is the replacement of the Endangered Species Act with a watered-down Species Conservation Act (Schedules 2 and 10). At a time when biodiversity is collapsing around the world, Ontario should be showing leadership—not rolling back hard-won environmental safeguards. Species at risk and their habitats don’t need more loopholes—they need firm, science-based protection.
I also want to emphasize that these proposals risk undermining Indigenous rights, including the right to free, prior, and informed consent for projects on traditional territories. Ontario has a responsibility to uphold these rights and work in genuine partnership with Indigenous Nations—not sidestep them through legislative shortcuts.
And let’s not forget the broader economic implications: Ontario’s boreal forests draw visitors from across Canada and around the world. Outdoor recreation and ecotourism depend on healthy ecosystems. The kind of unchecked development encouraged by Bill 5 could erode the very natural heritage that supports sustainable tourism and local livelihoods.
I urge you and your government to:
Cancel Bill 5 and any plans to gut the Endangered Species Act or create “regulation-free zones” for industry.
Recommit to strengthening protections for endangered species and the habitats they rely on.
This isn’t just about rules on paper—it’s about the future we leave behind. Please choose a path that respects the land, the communities who care for it, and the generations to come.
Sincerely,
A concerned citizen in Thunder Bay-Superior North
