ECA – Dresden Dump
1 - It is 2025. Of course the First Nations Peoples should be consulted in any land development process. This is a sign of respect to their community and for their traditional lands. Our government should not be adding insult to years of abuse and offensive attitudes towards these Peoples.
2 – An Environmental Assessment [EA] should absolutely be mandatory for development of the Dresden Dump. Serious and thoughtful consideration needs to be given to the potential impact of this chemical waste on this land, the potential impact on the nearby Sydenham River, and the potential harm to the people living in the area. The EA requirement was brought into place most likely as a result of harm done in the past. The government must respect that process, learn from past mistakes, and do the right thing by executing the full environmental study. Otherwise peoples’ lives may be at risk and essential habitat may be destroyed for species that exist nowhere else in Canada or few places in the world. To ignore the current rules and guidelines and proceed without caution and thorough studies is unconscionable.
