Not having an environmental assessment on a landfill is incredibly short-sighted and foolish. The efforts to fix whatever containment issues and ecological health outcomes will arise from this are not worth the short-term savings. Even if you only consider the financial implications of this decision, it doesn't balance out. The communities, including the downstream First Nations, have been very vocal about their rejection of the management of this site. This is beyond not wanting an eyesore in your backyard, and citizens have real concerns about their health and the environment, with no plan to keep people safe.
There should be no situation where there are no laws and the local communities do not have a say in what happens on their land.
Also, the ramifications for local businesses must be addressed. When (not if) there is a contamination issue in this farming community, the food will then be sent to poison citizens across Canada. We need more good farmland, not contaminated soil ruined for generations, affecting the region's agriculture and all the businesses that depend on it.
