Dear ERO:
I am AGAINST & DO NOT SUPPORT - Proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and a proposal for the Species Conservation Act, 2025
For the following reasons
1) Weakens our ability to protect endangered species in Ontario.
2) Limits consultation and is an attack on the Civil Liberties of Indigenous Peoples, Canadians & Ontarians.
3) Gives too much power to the Premier or the Ministers.
4) “Special Economic Zones” are a KNIFE TO THE HEART – losing protections – Short term +pos$ over long term -neg$$.
5) “Special Economic Zones” Exempting developers and resource companies from provincial regulations - disgraceful.
6) Allows activities that will damage natural areas resulting in (flooding, water degradation, air pollution, sprawl).
7) Allows projects to begin prior to species’ impacts being assessed or to being understood.
8) Replacing ‘harass’ with ‘kill, harm, or capture’, will weaken legislation & allow disturbances and disruptions to survival.
9) Changing ‘habitat’ to no longer include: spaces for migration, breeding, movement, foraging, etc. is detrimental.
10) De-listing Species will put species & key habitats at greater risk of destruction.
I urge the Ontario Government to CANCEL:
1) Bill 5
2) Plans to scrap the Endangered Species Act
3) Implement “regulation-free zones” for any reason.
4) Commit to strengthening the Endangered Species Act.
5) Implement "Special Economic Zones" for any reason.
6) Proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and a proposal for the Species Conservation Act, 2025
