My name is Emily Germain and I grew up in the Greenbelt. During Mr. Ford’s election campaign, I heard that he was planning on opening the Greenbelt for development, and decided not to vote for the Conservatives. When I heard Mr. Ford’s promise to leave the Greenbelt alone, I changed my mind and voted for him, wanting to get Wynne’s Liberals out. I’m very disappointed to discover that Ford’s Bill 66, in an effort to make Ontario more “competitive” economically, proposes to backtrack on integral environmental policy. I’m particularly concerned about Schedule 5, which suggests the province should repeal the Toxics Reduction Act, and Schedule 10, which would allow municipalities to grant permits to certain development projects, disregarding current legal requirements such as the Clean Water Act and the Greenbelt Act. I’m very concerned about the quality of our farmland, forests, air, and water. Bill 66, if it passes, will move the province backward in our response to the global environmental crisis. Not to mention it means that Doug Ford doesn’t mean a word he says. If this bill passes, I most certainly will not be voting for him ever again.
