In Ontario, we continue to stockpile spent fuel, remodel old technology, and deliver electricity through the nuclear industry methods. We know that human error, climate change, an earthquake, flood or snow event will at some point in time result in a serious nuclear incident. In most industries where potentially dangerous by-products are produced a clear community plan to contact individuals, who have agreed to register, via a phone/computer/email system is in place. There has been no attempt to provide such information to the public in the event of a problem. (this is a simple computer generated information send out) In the case of Ontario, most of our nuclear plants are in close proximity to the great lakes, Bruce/Pickering or on rivers that feed the great lakes like Chalk River. However, there are no known and publicly understood alternate water sources available for the third of the population of Canada that lives around the golden horseshoe and generally get their public drinking water from the Great Lakes. In Ontario, we have introduced a public education program to limit the damage a nuclear incident could cause. This type of public self-help messaging must be implemented to mitigate as much as possible the health damage to members of the public. As a community, we must have clearly defined information about air movement, this dispersion patterns could provide vital information for members of the public who need to evacuate. As a community, we must have a clearly defined process, in place before problems occur to address the safety issues such a calamity would cause. Finally, we absolutely must find a cleaner, safer and more economically viable method to provide energy to our province.
