Ecological systems are too complex to be recreated once destroyed; developed systems are easily recreated, since they were simple enough to be created in the first place. Accordingly, only allow development on already-developed land i.e. redevelopment. Housing doesn't have to be suburban sprawl all over - redevelop existing urban land with higher density.

It is interesting that all those supporting greenbelt development have a direct economic interest in that development. Offer them the same profit for doing something else, and their objections disappear - they too favour greenbelt preservation once their personal profit issue is addressed. Similarly, prohibit local businesses and tradespeople from working on the local development, but reserve distant development for them, and they will suddenly switch from promoting local development to distant development. Everybody without direct economic interests in green belt development favours green belt expansion.

The last thing we need is another airport in Pickering, to be completed about the time air travel gets reduced by increasing jet fuel costs, especially when Hamilton wants to expand their airport.
