I strongly disagree with the cancellation of the Cap and Trade program.
I am particularly opposed to shutting it down just to be replaced with vague promises of some other, future plan. The Cap and Trade program *is* a plan, already in motion, that was researched and designed by hard working members of previous governments both in Ontario and abroad. If the current government intends to halt the Cap and Trade program, it should have a suitable replacement ready to take the place of Cap and Trade without some indeterminate interim period of foot dragging.
The challenges we already face as a result of anthropogenic climate change demand decisive and expedient action. We are already past the point of impending multi-degree global temperature rises. The question now is how quickly can we work to minimize the damage that is already coming.
The current Ontario government claims to value fiscally responsible policies. What then, is fiscally responsible about inviting multi-billion dollar weather-centric disaster relief efforts in the coming years? We are already going to reap the costs of our poor decisions from decades past. We cannot afford to compound our mistakes with short-sighted policy decisions today.
This is not a political issue, it's a humanitarian one. And even if you don't want to consider it such, then consider it an economic one: if you actually intend to govern as you claim, then you must make the fiscally responsible decision and INCREASE our efforts to develop a sustainable society, not repeal what efforts we are already making.
