Post-secondary students have a vested interest in affordable, safe and accessible transit. Wilfrid Laurier University has campuses located in Brantford, Waterloo, Toronto, and soon Milton, surrounded by campuses of Conestoga College and Six Nations Polytechnic. Increased transit connectivity between Six Nations of the Grand River, Brantford-Brant County, Kitchener-Waterloo and the Greater Toronto Area would offer more options for students to pursue educational opportunities.

The safe and inclusive vision for GGH transit is shared by our organization. As many students commuting from the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve face barriers as a result of a lack of public transportation routes, we urge the plan to take this in to account. Specifically, in conjunction with the Indigenous inclusion lens that the plan intends to apply, Indigenous students, workers and community members should have access to equitable transit on- and off-reserve.

Affordable, safe and accessible transit benefits all of us in building stronger, more diverse and efficient communities. The regions listed above are continuously growing and providing equitable access to transit will ensure that these regions continue to reflect their diverse communities in the workforce, educational spaces and other sectors. Thank you in advance for considering students, particularly those of vulnerable identities, in the transportation planning process.

Sincerely,
Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union
