The cancellation of Cap and Trade was made in haste, without any viable alternative. I strongly oppose the cancellation without public consultation. Consulting now is to little to late. Cap and trade is an effective pricing mechanism to drive innovation amongst large emitters, as there is a way for early adopters and those reducing their outputs to make a profit from selling their allowances. A carbon tax does not accomplish this unless it is revenue neutral and funds R&D for carbon reductions. Your party has been clear in that it opposes a carbon tax, but to call cap and trade strictly a tax is catagorically false.

Unless your government has an alternative (which we have yet to see beyond “we’ll work on a plan”) it would be in the governments best interest to reinstate the cap and trade carbon pricing system as your revocation without consult was contrary to the environmental bill of rights, and it would appear you have no real plan for emissions reduction, putting your populist agenda ahead of the public interest. Do what is best for the people of Ontario. Grow up and govern.
