Allowing for development on the Green Belt does not address the increasing need for affordable and sustainable housing as it is going to cause more urban sprawl to areas that are not well serviced by transit, education, health care or infrastructure. At this point, the current urban sprawl has already caused major issues in the government's ability to provide adequate services to these communities as it already stands, meanwhile also spreading Toronto thin. The reason we have to build more highways linking these communities to the GTA is the fact that we're playing catch up with developments that have no rhyme or reason to be developed in the first place.
The Green Belt is vital in providing food to families in Ontario and beyond and as there is increasing inflation for the cost of food, it will be even more vital to get local produce and meat. In addition to providing food for the people who live in Ontario, it is a means for sequestering carbon emissions and providing clean air and water. Even if you are to relocate the land, it would take decades to provide the same level of environmental impact and ability to farm, if it's even possible at all.
Even with those things aside, the total economic impact of Greenbelt business activity is $9.1 billion in annual revenue. Selling off the Greenbelt is short sighted as once the land is sold and developed there would never be as substantial of a gain for the government or the people of Ontario.
Not touching the Green Belt was a campaign promise that Mr. Doug Ford made to the people that elected him. Please do not let it be a promise that he is going to break.
