This proposal is a complete farce at best and actively dangerous at worst. The Greenbelt is irreplaceable - opening it up for development would cause irreparable harm to Ontario's development goals, natural environment, watershed, and quality of life. The province seems content to carve it up without any concern to it's value or import, while pretending that this is about housing.
This will not solve the housing crisis. Building cheap single family homes in sprawling, car-dependent subdivisions is unsustainable and short-sighted - 70 years of practice has already proven that. When this is preferred to strategies of densification of existing built land, as this government seems to insist, it goes beyond negligence into naked corruption. Cheaply built sprawl on a floodplain - what could go wrong? Meanwhile cities remain low density, transit remains unbuilt, and woodland is chewed and blasted for the sake of asphalt as black as the minister's shrivelled heart.
Once the Greenbelt is gone, it's gone. Those subdivisions will be simmering wastelands of cheaply-built homes sold at vastly inflated prices, doomed to fall apart before they're even completed. What was once wood and marsh and farmland would become smoking, car-choked arteries, clogged with perennial traffic. Nobody stands to benefit from this beyond a small handful of developers and landowners trying to make a buck on the back of the rest of us.
This government promised repeatedly not to open up the Greenbelt to development - a promise it has consistently shown it has no intention of keeping. The fact that this is even being floated as a plan is an absolute disgrace. You're not solving anything - you're actively making our province a worse place to live.
