These past few generations have been the worst for environmental damage in history, our generation needs to be marked by improvement, not further destruction. Building densely in the interior of the city on land that is already developed is more sensible.
These urban developments built outwardly are soulless, endless suburban sprawls. Often built without stores, or restaurants. They perpetuate a cycle of traffic which produces more emissions, worsening air quality and congestion on road systems. Dense urban development on the other hand allows ease of access to everything, increasing walking, biking and use of public transport systems thereby reducing car reliance.
Furthermore what really makes Hamilton (and surrounding areas) so beautiful and special is the ease of access to nature. We should be preserving that at all costs.
