I would like to voice my absolute opposition to opening up parcels of the Greenbelt to development. The fact that this government is willing to put environmentally sensitive land at risk for the profit of a small number of developers is outrageous and beyond conscionable.
The Ontario Housing Affordability task force outlined as one of their recommendations (among many) that the government increase density, making more room for additional housing projects within the GTA without encroaching on environmentally sensitive land.
"Land is not being used efficiently across Ontario. In too many neighbourhoods, municipal rules only allow single-family
homes – not even a granny suite. Taxpayers have invested heavily in subway, light rail, bus and rail lines and highways, and the streets nearby are ideally suited for more mid- and
high-rise housing. Underused or redundant commercial and industrial buildings are ripe to be redeveloped into housing or mixed commercial and residential use. New housing
on undeveloped land should also be higher density than traditional suburbs, especially close to highways."
I hope that the electorate demonstrate that their memory is long enough to keep this abysmal proposal top of mind next election cycle.
