I worked on the creation of the Greenbelt and the Greenbelt Act back in 2003. All of the land that was included in the Greenbelt was carefully considered and the inclusion was the result of consultation with farmers, scientists, developers and Ontarians. You can not simply cut out and replace chunks of the Greenbelt due to the interconnectedness that is required for the ecological systems to function. Without functioning ecological systems our drinking water will degrade, we will lose species at risk, soil with become unusable for agriculture and the risk of flooding will increase. Along with the Greenbelt Act, there was also the Places to Grow Act, which specifically designated areas in the GTA Golden Horseshoe that would be appropriate for development. Why is that carefully developed advice being ignored?
