I am strongly opposed to the destruction of the greenbelt lands this proposal entails for many reasons -
1. The Premier and his Ministers have vowed on at least 15 public occasions that the greenbelt would not be used for development. They lied.
2. This proposal has seen little or no professional environmental impact study and way too little time for public comment and debate. This deadline for comment of Dec 4 is absurd. Give it a year or two for proper scrutiny by people who know what they are doing.
3. A cursory look at the maps show that the redesignated lands are close to waterways and drainage courses. Desirable only for the wealthy people that can purchase these choice ravine lots thereby enriching the developers. However it compromises the ability of the greenbelt to perform its intended function of absorbing water and mitigating the effects of climate change that are evident to everyone but Premier Ford and his followers.
4. I believe every conservation authority, municipality and nature-knowledgeable organization such as the Bruce Trail Conservancy opposes this amendment to the greenbelt plan just as I do and for many of the same reasons.
5. The ONLY people who will benefit from this action are the developers and speculators who the premier is determined to enrich. Perhaps he has been promised a cushy directorship when he leaves politics in 3 years. He certainly won't be reelected.
6. The fact that developers purchased some of the proposed redesignated land just before the proposal was made public makes it appear that they had been tipped off. This SMELLS to high heaven and may lead to criminal charges if a person or person leaked the details.
7. This amendment to the greenbelt plan is UNNECESSARY. There is ample land approved for development that is not being developed for housing because the developers and speculators believe that they can make more money by waiting for the land value to appreciate than they can make by building housing. Many municipalities such as Hamilton and Halton Hills have said that they can meet the demands for housing in their municipalities within their existing urban boundaries. No need to take even farmland let alone protected greenbelt land.
8. This proposal would make Ontario weaker and less desireable a place to live. The Premier is building his legacy. He will be remembered as the Premier that brought Ontario to its knees.
9. This just another in a long line of knee-jerk impulsive and self-serving gambits by the Premier that would harm Ontario and Ontarians. Fortunately many have been turned back by the courts or by organized labour or by citizens actions. I believe this proposal will also be turned back. There is just too much overwhelming opposition for it to overcome.
