Re: diapers and sanitary products in curbside collection programs and anaerobic digestion
Diapers and sanitary products make up a very small portion of organics that can be digested in an anaerobic digester. The greatest portion of diapers and sanitary products must be separated from the organics and ultimately end up in the landfill. The added cost of processing diapers alone is not at all cost effective. The added transportation costs also are counterproductive and add to the carbon footprint.
It would lessen the carbon footprint to keep diapers and sanitary products out of the organic curbside collection programs and include those products in the inorganic wastes that are currently sent to landfill as the additional handling and separation at the anaerobic digester translates into more trucking and processing costs.
