Building homes for the anticipated growth of the province is completely needed but taking Greenbelt land and converting it into quickly developed buildings to support 3% of the overall Bill 23 1.5 million goal makes zero sense. It’s completely against the principles of why the Greenbelt was established.
Ontario has more than 50% single detached homes and huge areas zoned for them. These zones and others could become so much more useful in supporting the 1.5 million goal without needing any Greenbelt land. Buildings in those zones can also be a huge part of our climate health solution by switching away from what we do, to what we should do; carbon drawdown building. I’ve included a link to a video that explains this more.
The natural systems of our great province want to grow and need to thrive. Very little of the human activity in the province is assisting this. There is a great need to bring stability and health to these natural systems in order to protect both our joined wellbeing and the forms of capital we do have. The Greenbelt is a great endeavour and finding ways to expand it as is would be the prudent activity we should be engaged in.
I ask that you please consult with and meaningfully engage with the Bruce Tail Conservancy and other conservation authorities to ensure that Bill 23 and this proposed amendment has their support.
