In my personal experience as young working professional the Cap and Trade Cancellation Act, 2018 is going to negatively affect my ability to contribute to a greener economy and society. I wish to live my life in a eco-friendly way, and the Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act, 2016, S.O. 2016, c. 7 provided incentives and opportunities for me to progress towards that. With the Cancellation Act, an economy/entry level priced zero-emissions vehicle are once again unaffordable at my entry level position salary (newly acquired, previously a student with little to no income). The pricing incentive previously provided by the provincial government CCMLEA brought the cost of such vehicles (Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, Ford Focus) into something realistic, though during the span of the program I was a transitional student, unable to afford and without a permanent drive way to park it in. I believe that the benefits to green infrastructure brought on by the increased demand for Electric Vehicles (EV) were positively accelerating and I fear that with the cancellation act, the progression will be stalled.
Though the CCMLEA act was not perfect, I do not think it correct for the provincial government to cancel it prior to the announcement of a new plan/act/report with some research-backed, evolved plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With the release of the IPCC climate report and the upcoming ending of the UN's decade on biodiversity, the international policy negotiators are calling for more commitment, Ontario seems to be committing less to a problem we are clearly contributing to causing.
