I understand there will be a full Environmental Assessment on the property that is being proposed for a landfill just outside of Dresden. While I salute the Minister who made this decision I feel this is a waste of taxpayers money. This project should be rejected outright.
The property is on Molly's Creek which feeds into the Sydenham River. A no brainer when it comes to saving the Environment. The Property is, with additional land already purchased for expansion, only 200 meters from the town line of Dresden. It is less than .5km to downtown Dresden. Again I understood the law of the land is no landfills within 3.5KM of a town or border. Why is this one even being considered?
The property is 20KM from the 401 and 40KM from Hwy 402. This is a farming community and the roads are clogged in the spring and summer with slow moving farm equipment. The company is proposing hundreds of trucks arriving and departing the property daily. It seems to me most landfills are usually located within a km or two of a major roadway. The route to this proposed dump would go through multiple school zones and the routes for 10 months of the year will be very active with school buses.
As I mentioned above the property is located within 200 meters of the community of Dresden with the first major subdivision being within 400 meters. This being said when you add the noise pollution from crushing and recycling concrete, the air pollution from the burying of 500 tonnes of asbestos and the 500 tonnes of separated at source of organic and putrescible waste (most oderous waste in a landfill) and the arrival and departure of hundreds of trucks daily 24/7. The quality of life for those living in the subdivision less than 1/2km away will be severely affected, the rejection stamp should have been in hand when this arrived on the first desk in the Ministry responsible for landfills in Ontario.
There are so many reasons why this is a bad fit and I have only outlined a few. To allow this project to carry on will end up with another 9 year fight like the one in Ingersoll, with a lot of money wasted by the Government and the proponent.
