The draft Strategic Policy for Bait Management in Ontario offers improvements to OMNRF’s current baitfish policy. The authors should congratulate themselves for this draft. They still need to address these and other comments to make it an outstanding policy.

I completely disagree with the new proposal for baitfish management. I am an avid hunter and angler. I love to fish every single available weekend I have. I live in Orangeville Ontario, and very rarely do I fish within my FMZ. I am a frequent angler in zone 18 and zone 15.

I trap minnows in a creek that flows into Centenial lake and then I use these same minnows to fish in Centenial lake . I need to travel by vehicle from the place that I trap the minnows to where I keep my boat to go fishing in Centenial lake .

In regards to your bait management for Ontario I agree with many of the bait management regulations My concerns are with the Englehart River Robillard Long Lake chain from the town of Charlton in the east Englehart River to Mc calls bay From there into Robillard and continuing into Long Lake (Fin

Starting with Reducing the Legal Bait Species list. It is already difficult sorting and eliminating by catch and aquatic plants as well as species at risk. What is legal today will be an illegal practice tomorrow. Best Management practices should be put in first.

The banning of live or dead bait in the Englehart river and longlake water way not a smart, the water way is a flat system with no barriers to stop the bait from traveling between the river to lake at McCall's bay to the longlake and from longlake to the river north of Hwy 66.

I concur that it is essential that we protect our natural resources from invasive species however, some of the proposed implementation mechanisms lack depth in achieving this goal while balancing the interests of fishermen, their families, and friends.

Baitfish should NOT be allowed in Brook Trout Ecosystems - we continue to lose Brook Trout lakes and river systems to baitfish introductions (suckers and spiny rayed fish in particular). The same may be said for Lake Trout systems.

The banning of using live bait (minnows & leeches) is uncalled for, particularly for the Englehart River Fine Sand Plain Waterway Provincial Park (ERFSPWPP). The majority of live bait used on/in the lake is harvested from local minnow traps.

The use of the word strategic in the title for this review appears to be misleading. The stated purpose is to provide proposal direction for the sustainable use and harvest of bait in Ontario in order to reduce ecological risk while maintaining a viable bait industry.

I find living on a pension I prefer to trap my own minnows and keep them alive with an aerator as long as possible or until I use them up. Because we live within 2 km.

Well, you have shown your inept ignorance once again. You have mishandled the moose file, the bear file, the timberwolf file and now you are going after the bait industry. To show your ignorance on this you scheduled these stake holder meetings during our busiest time of the year.

I think that the person that came up with such stupid rules should bang their head on a rock till they think of a better Idea lol. Who thinks of such stupid rules??? Leave it to the MNRF to dream up something really stupid. Keep your stupid rules south of the French river....

Main funded priority needs to further educate and raise awareness regarding angler bait collection. This should be as enjoyable as other forms of recreational species identification and differentiation to reduce/limit unwanted results.
