Proposal details

This proposal is for a new Environmental Compliance Approval (air & noise) for Laurentis Energy Partners Inc., to renovate an existing warehouse in the City of Hamilton, Ontario, to support the operations of its Laurentis Innovation Centre (LIC). LIC will focus on the processing and packaging of medical isotopes for use in cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as the continued segregation and recycling of low-level nuclear by-products (items like small tools, worker garments, and mops and rags used in cleaning).

This application includes all emission sources from the facility that exhaust to the atmosphere including four laboratory fume exhausts, one energy recovery ventilator and shipments of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) certified packages of medical isotopes produced at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. Laurentis staff will repack the isotopes into smaller salable packages which will then be shipped to another licensed third-party facility or radiopharmaceutical company for use in cancer diagnosis and treatments.

Facility staff will also sort, and process federally regulated low-level nuclear by-products from Ontario’s nuclear power plants to separate conventional or recyclable waste before the materials are shipped off-site to licensed third-party facilities. Contaminants assessed for potential emissions to the atmosphere include:

  • nitrogen oxides
  • methane
  • triethylphosphate
  • bis(isopropyl) naphthalene
